FAQs

Is this counselling or therapy?

No. It's practical education and skills training for couples who are happy and heading towards marriage. We're not here to fix problems. We're here to help you prevent them down the road.

Can I book this for my son or daughter and their partner?

Absolutely. In fact, most of our workshop packages are purchased by parents looking to start their children's marriage off on the strongest possible footing. We're happy to arrange this as a gift, though both partners need to attend.

Is this a prenup?

No. We don't draft or advise on binding financial agreements. What we do is help you understand what marriage means legally and financially, and have the conversations that make any future financial decision an informed one. If you decide you want a prenup, we'll point you to a family lawyer.

Are you giving legal advice?

No. The workshops provide general education about the legal and financial realities of marriage. They are not legal advice, and they are not a substitute for advice from a lawyer about your own circumstances.

Does this mean you expect our marriage to fail?

Quite the opposite. We are great believers in marriage. We started this business to give more couples the best chance of having the idyllic marriage they are dreaming about. Most of what goes wrong in marriages comes from misaligned expectations and avoided conversations. Both are highly preventable.

What actually happens in the workshops?

The workshops are delivered over two sessions, each 90 minutes to 2 hours, held online at least a week apart. In the first, we work through the big topics couples often avoid: money, children, family and intimacy. We also cover the legal side of marriage, including how property and parenting are viewed once you're married.

Between the two sessions, we'll give you some homework to work through together.

The second session includes a conversation about the golden rules of a successful marriage, as well as training in how to start and, most critically, hold challenging conversations.

We do ask that one of the sessions takes place during working hours, so we can serve as many clients as conveniently as possible. We're very happy to start early in the day if that suits you.

What if one of us is reluctant?

That's common, and often it's about not knowing what to expect. The sessions are relaxed and non-confronting, and nobody is put on the spot or asked to share anything they aren't ready to. Many reluctant partners tell us afterwards they're glad they came.

What if we already disagree on some things?

Then you're normal. Every couple differs on something. The aim isn't to agree on everything; it's to know where you each stand and to be able to talk about it before it becomes a source of tension. As mediators, we can help you discuss your points of difference and find common ground.

Do we have to be engaged? What if we're already married?

No. Most couples come to us in the months before their wedding, but it's never too early or too late to learn how to have a great relationship.

Are the workshops tied to any particular religion?

No. The Before You Say I Do workshop is suitable for any couple, of any faith, or none at all.

When should we book?

Ideally at least six months before the wedding, when the planning is well underway but there's still time to talk things through.

Booking in the last few weeks is possible, but it's easier to have these conversations before the final rush.

Where do the sessions take place?

The sessions take place online, so we can work with couples anywhere in Australia.

How much does it cost?

$1,400 per couple for both sessions. That's less than most couples spend on wedding flowers, and it's the only wedding expense that's an investment in the actual marriage.

The sessions are highly personalised, because different couples need guidance in different areas.

Is what we discuss confidential?

Yes. What you share with us stays with us.

How do we get started?
